Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Bangladesh boasts a long-standing maritime heritage, deeply rooted in its coastal waters and seafaring traditions. The Bay of Bengal has been a critical maritime route for centuries, connecting the region to global trade networks. From the expert shipbuilders of Chattogram and Sandwip during the wooden ship era to the vibrant port activities that sustained international commerce, Bangladesh's maritime legacy continues to play a key role in the country's development. The peaceful resolution of maritime boundary disputes with Myanmar in 2012 and India in 2014, through international legal frameworks, was a historic achievement. These settlements have given Bangladesh sovereign rights over a vast sea area in the Bay of Bengal, rich in resources and economic potential.

In recent years, Bangladesh has made significant strides in securing its maritime sovereignty and expanding its maritime economy. The current government, has emphasized the importance of the Blue Economy as a vital pillar for the nation's sustainable growth. Bangladesh’s vast maritime zones hold tremendous potential for sectors such as marine fisheries, the shipping industry, maritime tourism, and resource exploration in the Bay of Bengal. The interim government’s commitment to strengthening maritime governance is crucial for the nation’s progress in these areas.

BSMRMU established in 2013, is playing a pivotal role in developing skilled human resources for the maritime sector. BSMRMU started its journey towards its motto, "We Strive for Maritime Excellence" in order to provide global standard maritime higher education and research.  The University’s mission is to provide world-class maritime education and research to meet both national and global demands.
