Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University is the pioneer university in the field of Maritime in Bangladesh. From its inception in 2013, the university attempted to realize the need of the industry and based on that assessment it decided to introduce the discipline of Port and Shipping Management.

The department started its formal journey under the Faculty of Shipping Administration by introducing a Master Programme in Port and Shipping Management. The first batch of this programme was started on 15 September 2015. In the first batch 25 students of different background got admission in the course and running successfully. The student admission for the second batch is under process now. The department intends to inaugurate more Master Programmes as well as undergraduate programmes in various fields relevant to commercial management and operation of Port and Shipping in near future.

The student admission for the sixth batch is under process now. The second batch of BBA in Port Management and Logistics is ongoing and admission process of the 3rd batch is now under process.

In parallel to this Master Programme, the Department is conducting the certificate courses in different discipline on Maritime field. It has already conducted a course on 'Dangerous Goods Handling and Transportation'. Total 19 participants from different government and private agencies attended the course. The department has planned to introduce such courses based on the demand from the industry practitioners included but not limited on:

• Port Operation and Management
• Supply Chain Management
• Multimodal Transportation
• Import and Export
• Freight Forwarding
• Ship Chartering Practices
• And others
