Bangladesh has a long and proud history of seafaring and a rich maritime heritage. Historically, the Bay of Bengal has been a lifeline for merchants and traders from around the world, from the imperial Chinese fleets of the 15th century to the British East India Company in the 17th and 18th centuries. The wonderful craftsmanship of the master shipbuilders in Chattogram and Sandwip during the era of wooden ships was in high demand across many European countries and elsewhere. The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman set the ‘Maritime Vision’ by the promulgation of “Territorial Waters and Maritime Zones Act, 1974”. This was indeed an important milestone in the maritime history of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu cleaned and operationalized the mine-infested Chattogram port as a part of Bangladesh's restoration effort. By acquiring new dredgers for BIWTA, passenger ships for BIWTC, seagoing vessels for Bangladesh Shipping Company, and a number of warships and facilities for the Bangladesh Navy, he also restored the nation's marine industry. He also finished the Inland River Survey. In a nutshell, he was Bangladesh's maritime architect.

Under the pragmatic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has been endowed with a large sea area by resolving the maritime boundary dispute with India and Myanmar. Additionally, Prime Minister’s Vision 2021, Vision 2041, and the Delta Plan 2100 all are interwoven with the maritime sector and the Blue Economy of Bangladesh. To materialize her visions, we need quality human resources in the maritime sector. We need experts in marine fisheries, the shipping industry, maritime tourism, and in sea resources exploration of the Bay of Bengal. With the aim to produce quality human resources for the local and global maritime sector, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU) came out as the first-ever maritime university of Bangladesh by an Act of the Parliament on 26 October 2013. BSMRMU started its journey towards its motto, "We Strive for Maritime Excellence" in order to provide global standard maritime higher education and research. The University is always endeavoring to create maritime awareness and facilitate marine professionals, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote ideas and thought processes about our future maritime potential. Several MOUs have already been signed with reputed maritime universities of the world for the necessary support to maintain a high standard in the education system. Toward attaining its goals, the university has been conducting both graduate and postgraduate programs in various maritime fields.

Towards fulfilling its goals, BSMRMU is conducting undergraduate and postgraduate programs under 7 faculties and 38 departments in various fields, which include subjects related to Oceanography, Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, Maritime Science, Marine Biotechnology, Maritime Law, Maritime Business, Port and Shipping Management and other maritime disciplines. The University has the dual role of running higher-level courses for students, as well as regulating the affiliated institutions like Bangladesh Marine Academy and Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Academy for their graduate/post-graduate programs. We are in the process of shifting to our permanent campus at Hamid Char, Chattogram in an area of 106 acres in the next 2/3 years. The University is progressing steadily towards the goal of creating a center of maritime excellence in this region and making a smart university for the maritime Bangladesh.

Having collaborated with reputed national and international universities and institutions, BSMRMU regularly organizes seminars, joint research, exchange of experienced faculty members, and mutual visits of academic interest.

As the Vice-Chancellor of BSMRMU, I am honored to welcome you to this official website. The website has been established so that you may learn more about our mission, vision, and goals. Also, this will be a wonderful platform for learning about the many ongoing events, facilities that are available, journals and publications, and other crucial details of academic and administrative relevance. I would like to extend a request to every member of the maritime community to share their insightful opinions and suggestions in order to elevate this University into a global standard smart Maritime University for the region and beyond.
